could be arrived at without recourse to arbitration. The only recent case of a similar nature is that of K.M.L's 29-31, Yaumati, in front of which the Colonial Government has carried out a reclamation, the depth of such reclamation being about 570 feet. In that case, nearly the whole of the Marine Lot-holders declined to come to terms and the matter proceeded to arbitration, the claims being heard before His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir F. Pigott). The amounts of com- pensation awarded were equivalent to about $122.50 per foot of frontage, but, when the costs of the arbitration are included, the payment per foot of frontage amounted to about $159.50.

5. It is impossible to give any reliable estimate of the amount which would be awarded in the case of the Praya East lots, but it may be taken at $200 per foot, including costs. The extent of frontage involved in the Admiralty's proposal for the acquisition of a six lots is about 1,720 feet and the cost of extinguishing the front- age rights of the present owners may therefore be put at $344,000.

6. Adopting the above sum as the amount of compensation to be paid to Marine Lot-holder, the following is an estimate of the entire expenditure which would be involved in acquiring possession of the
